Big Third Quarter Sends Women's Hoops to Road Win

The No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team forced 34 turnovers and finished with a 38-23 scoring advantage in the second half Wednesday night to defeat UW-Platteville 67-58 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Platteville, Wis.
 
Trailing by six at halftime, the Warhawks (15-3 overall, 5-2 WIAC) outscored the Pioneers 21-7 in the third quarter and converted 6-of-8 free throws to maintain their lead in the fourth.
 
Sophomore guard Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) posted a team-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench. Senior guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) contributed 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks and seven steals, which tied for the 17th-most in one game in school history. Senior forward Andrea Meinert (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) was also in double figures with 12 points to go along with four rebounds.
 
Junior forward Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals off the bench.
 
After scoring the first four points of the game, UW-Whitewater took its largest lead of the first quarter with 1:36 on the clock after a jumper by Meinert, and led 17-13 by the end of the period.
 
In the second, UW-Platteville (5-13, 1-6) took a 25-20 advantage at the 5:30 mark thanks to a 10-0 run. The Warhawks responded with a 7-0 run for a two-point lead, but the Pioneers recorded the final four points of the quarter to take a 35-29 halftime lead.
 
UW-Whitewater tied the game with 8:26 left in the third by opening the half on a 6-0 run, which extended to 19-2 after Raeder's layup just beyond the midway point of the frame.
 
UW-Platteville drew within six early in the fourth quarter and narrowed its deficit to five with 6:47 to go, but Raeder scored five straight points to bring the advantage back to double digits 30 seconds later.
 
The Pioneers got as close as five with 3:23 remaining, but the Warhawks scored the next six points to resume control of the contest.
 
UW-Whitewater plays its fourth road game in its last five this Saturday at 5 p.m. at UW-Eau Claire.
