The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship for the third consecutive season Friday morning, downing Concordia (Wis.) 5-0 in a first round match at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
With the win, the Warhawks (15-11 overall) will face the host Gusties, who are ranked 21st in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, in Saturday's second round at 10 a.m.
UW-Whitewater swept the three doubles matches from the Falcons (20-7) to take a 3-0 lead. Junior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) combined for an 8-1 triumph at No. 3, and junior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) and sophomore
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) teamed up for an 8-4 victory at the first position. Sophomore
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and freshman
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) recorded the third point with an 8-5 win at the second slot.
Calabria registered a shutout at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph to make it 4-0 in favor of the Warhawks. Navratil clinched the match at the second position with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
UW-Whitewater led in the four remaining matches that were halted after the decision had been reached.
The Warhawks have now won five consecutive dual matches.
