The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team concluded the first half of its season Thursday afternoon with wins over Dubuque (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader at van Steenderen Softball Complex.
The Warhawks (15-5 overall) claimed a 7-0 victory in the first game before closing out the day with a 10-0 triumph in five innings by run rule.
In the opener, UW-Whitewater tallied 14 hits and held the Spartans (8-16) to four hits in the contest.
Sophomore
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) surrendered two hits in five shutout innings to record the win, improving to 3-1 overall, and added three hits at the plate. Freshman
Kylie Hoffman (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley) tossed two scoreless frames in relief.
Sophomore centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) registered three hits, including two doubles and a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning, and added two runs scored and four runs batted in.
Senior first baseman
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) collected two hits and one RBI, and junior left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) registered two RBI.
The nightcap started with two and one-half scoreless innings before the Warhawks plated six in the third and four in the fourth, holding Dubuque scoreless to end the game by run rule after 4 1/2 innings.
Freshman
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) moved to 6-3 on the year with the win, allowing only one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in four innings. Freshman
Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning in relief.
Freshman third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) knocked her first career home run and finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Junior second baseman Michaela Swanson recorded two hits and two RBI, Ricci knocked in two runs and Klotz contributed two hits and scored one run.
UW-Whitewater returns to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this Saturday against No. 9 UW-Eau Claire. First pitch at van Steenderen Complex is slated for 1 p.m.
The Warhawks will recognize the 30th anniversary of their 1987 NCAA Division III national runner-up team as part of Alumni Day in Whitewater.
