The No. 21 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team saw its four-game winning streak come to a close before recovering nicely with a victory to split a pair of games at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla., on the team's final day at the National Training Center Spring Games.
The Warhawks closed their spring break trip with a 10-2 record following a 10-2 setback in five innings against St. Thomas (Minn.) and an 8-1 triumph over Hendrix (Ark.).
In its second game of the day, UW-Whitewater recorded a season-high 16 hits, including four apiece from junior left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) and senior right fielder
Haley Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein). Klotz also scored three runs and knocked one in, while Morelli totaled a team-high three RBI.
Senior first baseman
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, and freshman third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) collected two hits and one RBI.
Sophomore pitcher
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) went the distance to earn her second win of the season, surrendering only one unearned run on six hits while striking out six.
The Warhawks tallied six unanswered runs to start the contest, including three in the second inning on run-scoring hits from Klotz, Ricci and Morelli, and two in the fourth on RBI singles by Morelli and Cohrs.
The Warriors (11-12) scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 6-1, but UW-Whitewater responded with one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to give Camardo plenty of breathing room.
In the opener, the Tommies (10-3) broke a 1-1 tie with eight runs in the top of the second inning, scored another in the top of the fifth and held the Warhawks to one run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game by run rule.
Ricci and sophomore second baseman
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) each registered two hits to lead the UW-Whitewater offense. Klotz hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first, and Ricci singled home the Warhawks' other run in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman pitcher
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) took the loss, falling to 4-2 on the season after pitching the first 2 2/3 frames. Freshman
Kylie Hoffman (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley) tossed the final 2 1/3 frames.
The Warhawks resume action Tuesday at Lake Forest (Ill.). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
