CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 19 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team remained undefeated for the 2017 season Saturday with two more non-conference victories at the National Training Center Softball Complex.
The Warhawks (4-0 overall) started the day with a comeback 10-6 triumph in eight innings over Wesleyan (Conn.) and wrapped it up with a 6-3 win over Amherst (Mass.).
In the first game of the day, UW-Whitewater erased a two-run deficit in the top of the seventh inning thanks to a rally with two out and nobody on.
After junior left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) singled, sophomore centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) knocked a double to bring the team within one run. Catino came around to score on an error one batter later to tie the game at 5-5.
Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, the Warhawks plated five runs in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring single by sophomore shortstop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and back-to-back, two-run hits by Klotz and Catino.
The Cardinals (1-4) scored once in the bottom half of the frame, but freshman
Kylie Hoffman (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley), with the help of a double play on a fly ball to left, escaped the jam with no further damage to pick up her first career win.
Hoffman relieved starter
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) with two outs in the fourth and tossed the remainder of the game, allowing only the unearned run in the eighth and allowing only two hits while striking out three.
Catino finished the game 3-for-5 with one run and five runs batted in, while Klotz posted two hits, one walk, three runs and two RBI. Rux collected two hits and scored two runs while knocking in one.
In the second game, UW-Whitewater took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, breaking a 3-3 tie on consecutive RBI hits by senior first baseman
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and freshman third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland). The team added an insurance run in the sixth on an error to account for the final margin.
Coming off a no-hitter Friday, freshman
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) improved to 2-0 on the season, scattering eight hits over seven innings and allowing three runs (one earned) while striking out five.
Catino, Ricci and Cohrs registered two hits apiece to account for all six of the Warhawks' hits in the contest. Freshman catcher
Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and sophomore second baseman
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) each knocked in one run.
UW-Whitewater continues action in Clermont Sunday with games against Elmhurst (Ill.) and St. Catherine (Minn.) at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Central Time, respectively.
