The No. 19 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team was held to a season-low 20.5 percent shooting from the field Saturday en route to a 70-50 setback at UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference affair in Menomonie, Wis.
 
The Warhawks (18-3 overall, 8-2 WIAC) grabbed 25 offensive rebounds and forced 20 turnovers, but the Blue Devils shot 47.2 percent, including a 50 percent clip in the first half, and held a 38-12 advantage on points in the paint.
 
Senior guard Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) posted 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead UW-Whitewater. Junior guard Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) collected five points, a team-best nine rebounds, three assists and a team-high five steals, and sophomore center Becky Deichl (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) registered four points, five rebounds and two blocks.
 
Neither team led by more than two points in the first quarter as the Blue Devils took a 12-11 lead into the break.
 
In the second, UW-Stout (7-14, 3-7) opened up a double-digit lead thanks to hot shooting. A pair of free throws by Smith brought the Warhawks to within 20-16 with 6:32 left in the period, but the Blue Devils closed the half on a 15-3 run to take a 35-19 advantage into halftime.
 
UW-Whitewater drew to within 44-33 with 4:09 left in the third quarter following back-to-back 3-pointers by Stewart and sophomore guard Emily Kraft (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).
 
Stewart hit another 3-pointer with 1:49 on the clock to bring the Warhawks within eight, but UW-Stout closed the period with four straight points to bring its lead back to double digits.
 
The Blue Devils extended their lead to 19 by the 7:14 mark of the fourth quarter and didn't look back.
 
UW-Whitewater returns to action Wednesday as it hosts UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. on Women's All-America Night at Kachel Gymnasium.
