The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team won its first four matches Wednesday night but was unable to hang on in a 28-15 setback at Division II No. 5 UW-Parkside at DeSimone Gymnasium in Somers, Wis.
Competing with six freshmen and three sophomores, the Warhawks (10-7 overall) took a 15-0 lead in the match before dropping the last six against the Rangers (11-2).
Sophomore
John Broughton (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School), freshmen
Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) each earned decisions to lead UW-Whitewater.
At 149 pounds, Broughton broke a 2-2 tie with a reversal in the waning moments of the match to post a 4-2 decision and improve his record to 12-5 on the season.
Rice recorded a 7-2 decision at 133 pounds to move to 20-9 on the season, and Tortorice improved to 10-4 at 141 pounds with a 5-3 decision.
Freshman
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) earned a forfeit at 125 pounds to give the Warhawks a 6-0 advantage out of the gate.
The Warhawks resume action this Saturday at UW-Eau Claire's Don Parker Open. Competition begins at 10 a.m. in UW-Whitewater's final tune-up prior to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 10 at UW-Platteville.
