Women Suffer First Loss At No. 4 Wartburg

The No. 11 ranked UW-Whitewater women's basketball team fell to fourth-ranked Wartburg, 64-55, in a non-conference contest in the championship game at the Wartburg Holiday Tournament in Waverly, Iowa.

The Warhawks (10-1 overall) forced 26 turnovers in the contest, but were held to 31.7 percent shooting from the floor compared to Wartburg's 46.2 percent field goal shooting.

The Knights (11-0) recorded 45 rebounds in the contest and went on a 13-3 run in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.

Senior guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) paced the team with 15 points and eight rebounds.  Junior center Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) recorded 10 points in the contest. Sophomore Camri Conley (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and senior Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) added eight points apiece for the Warhawks?.

Despite Wartburg scoring the first seven points of the game, the Warhawks climbed their way back by finishing the quarter with an 8-0 run to lead the Knights 16-13 at the end of the quarter.

Wartburg countered in the second quarter and took the lead at 7:33 in the quarter.  Trewyn drained two free throws to bring the Warhawks back within four to end the half.

UW-Whitewater regained the lead in beginning of the third quarter with baskets from Trewyn and Smith.  Wartburg
responded with a 6-0 run.  The Warhawks forced five turnovers in the third quarter and trailed by two going into the fourth.

Trewyn gave the Warhawks a spark at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a three-point play to take a one-point lead before the Knights posted their 13-3 run for a 60-49 lead with 1:56 remaining in the game. 

Trewyn and Conley were awarded All Tournament honors from their performances in the two contests during the weekend. The Warhawks downed No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 68-60 on Friday.

UW-Whitewater returns to Kachel Gymnasium on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to host the first conference contest of the season against No. 5 UW-Oshkosh.
