The No. 12 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team knocked off No. 1 Wartburg (Iowa) 21-20 in its third and final dual Saturday at the Candlewood Suites Duals at UW-La Crosse.
 
The Warhawks (5-1 overall) finished 2-1 for the day, also defeating No. 21 Concordia Moorhead 41-6. The team was downed 26-16 by No. 2 Augsburg (Minn.) to start the day.
 
Senior Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy), sophomores Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) and Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) each finished 3-0 for the day.
 
Against the top-ranked Knights (4-1), UW-Whitewater claimed six of 10 matches, including the first three of the dual.
 
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) started the dual with a 5-2 decision over Connor Cleveland at 125 pounds, and sophomore Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) tripled the Warhawks' lead with a fall in 3:38 at 133 pounds over Brennen Doebel, listed as a contender by D3wrestle.com.
 
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), ranked ninth by D3wrestle.com and 10th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, gave UW-Whitewater a 12-0 lead with a 4-3 decision over Brock Rathburn at 141.
 
Sophomore Ryder Sigler (Fredonia, Wis./Cedarburg) and junior Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) were winners at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Sigler knocked off Derek Lee Loy, the nation's consensus No. 8 wrestler at 165, by a 3-2 decision. Bonomo earned four points with a 14-2 major decision over Max Forsyth.
 
With the Warhawks leading 18-14, Newman, the nation's consensus No. 1 at 197, collected a 4-2 decision over Kyle Fank, who is ranked second by D3wrestle.com and third by the NWCA.
 
In the win over Concordia Moorhead (1-3), UW-Whitewater was victorious at nine of 10 weights, including pins by Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), Rice, Stencel and Newman.
 
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) recorded a 12-4 major decision over Adam Presler, ranked seventh by the NWCA at 141 pounds. Bonomo registered a 3-1 decision over Jake Johnson, ranked fourth by D3wrestle.com and fifth by the NWCA. Sophomore Wilder Wichman (Watertown, Wis./Johnson Creek) posted a 19-8 major decision at 157 pounds over Ben Baumgartner, ranked ninth by D3wrestle.com.
 
The Warhawks were tied at 6-6 against Augsburg (2-0) before the Auggies won four consecutive bouts. Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), Stencel all claimed victories by decision before the Augsburg run. Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel)'s triumph came against Victor Gliva, who is ranked third by the NWCA and eighth by D3wrestle.com.
 
Newman scored four points with a 12-1 major decision over Sebastian Larson, listed as a contender by D3wrestle.com. Freshman Dylan Uzumecki (Batavia, Ill./Batavia), who finished 2-1 for the day, tallied a 2-0 decision at 285 pounds to give UW-Whitewater an even split of the 10 contests.
 
The Warhawks continue action next week against a pair of in-state, scholarship programs. The team heads to UW-Parkside Wednesday for the annual Sake Bottle Battle at 7 p.m. before hosting Wisconsin Saturday at 1 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.
