No. 11 Warhawks Down Waldorf

The No. 11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team withstood a second-half rally Saturday night to defeat Waldorf (Iowa) by a 75-57 score in a non-conference affair at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
Junior guard Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) tallied a career-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and added six rebounds to lead the Warhawks (2-0 overall), who registered 23 points off the Warriors' 21 turnovers and committed only 11 miscues of their own.
 
Junior guard David Sachs (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) collected 14 points and eight assists with only one turnover, and junior guard Mitchell Pfiefer recorded 12 points and four rebounds.
 
Junior guard Maurquis Turner (Milwaukee, Wis./King) contributed eight points and four rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench, and junior forward Derek Rongstad (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) posted seven points, five rebounds and a team-high three steals.
 
UW-Whitewater jumped on Waldorf (2-6) early, taking a 19-6 lead after a 3-pointer by Pfeifer with 12:27 left in the first half.
 
The Warriors responded with a 9-0 run to cut their deficit to four by the midway point of the period, but the Warhawks extended the advantage back to double digits thanks to a 3-pointer by junior guard Dalton Menke (Rockford, Ill./Winnebago) with 8:01 on the clock.
 
UW-Whitewater held a 40-29 lead by halftime.
 
Waldorf whittled its deficit all the way down to one point with 12:59 remaining in the second half. Sachs registered a pair of buckets, and Brown converted a put-back layup to bring the Warhawk lead up to seven with 10:42 to play.
 
UW-Whitewater built its lead back to double digits by the 6:38 mark, when Turner converted a layup to make it 61-50.
 
The Warhawks never let their lead slip below that margin the rest of the way.
 
UW-Whitewater continues its home stand Tuesday at 8 p.m. against Monmouth (Ill.). The game is part of a women's/men's doubleheader at Kachel Gymnasium.
