The No. 12 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team claimed four matches and were within one point with two bouts remaining Thursday night before falling 23-13 at fifth-ranked UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual in La Crosse, Wis.
 
The Warhawks (7-6 overall, 3-2 WIAC) were edged by three points or fewer in three matches in a match-up featuring the conference's two perennial national contenders.
 
The Eagles (7-0, 3-0) claimed the final two matches to wrap up their first dual win over UW-Whitewater since 2011.
 
Senior Zac Denny (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem), ranked No. 2 in the nation at 125 pounds by both the National Wrestling Coaches Association and D3wrestle.com, fought through an early four-point near fall against him on his way to a 16-7 decision over Nelson Baker.
 
Senior Joseph Brodman (Tiffin, Ohio/Calvert) followed suit at 133 pounds with a 9-4 decision over the nation's consensus No. 8 wrestler, Ryan Weinmann. Brodman is currently ranked 10th by D3wrestle.com.
 
At 165 pounds, freshman Mike Kouvelis (Fox Lake, Ill./Grant Community) scored a third-period takedown for his 15th win of the year, a 4-3 decision over Logan Schlough, to bring the Warhawks within 11-9.
 
Senior Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy), ranked first by D3wrestle.com and fourth by the NWCA, drew UW-Whitewater to within 14-13 with a dominant performance in a 15-2 major decision over Alex Friedman, who is ranked eighth by the NWCA.
 
The Warhawks continue action Saturday by hosting the Rocky Rococo Border Brawls at Kachel Fieldhouse inside the Williams Center. UW-Whitewater begins the day at 11 a.m. against North Central (Ill.) before taking on Concordia (Wis.) at 12:45 p.m. and Harper (Ill.) at 2:30 p.m.
