The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team, ranked 12th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, piled up six pins and a pair of technical falls Thursday night in a 41-6 triumph over UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual in Oshkosh, Wis.
The Warhawks (7-5, 3-1 WIAC) set the tone early with four straight wins and added three straight pins later in the match to pull away from the Titans (2-11, 1-3).
Junior
Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy), sophomore
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), freshmen
Riley Kauzlaric (Coal City, Ill./Coal City) and
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) earned six points apiece with pins at their respective weights.
Newman, ranked No. 1 in the nation by D3wrestle.com and No. 4 by the NWCA, improved to 9-3 with his fourth pin of the year at 184 pounds in one minute, 23 seconds.
Bonomo, the nation's consensus No. 9 wrestler at 174, pinned Colten Cashmore in one minute, 42 seconds.
Kauzlaric recorded a pin in four minutes, eight seconds at 197 for his sixth victory of the season, and Tortorice, ranked fourth by D3wrestle.com and seventh by the NWCA, pinned Jeremiah Recinos in four minutes, 13 seconds.
Seniors
Zac Denny (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) and
Joseph Brodman (Tiffin, Ohio/Calvert) tallied technical falls at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Denny, ranked No. 2 in the nation by both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com, downed Ethan Altabet 21-5 in the third period, and Brodman, slotted eighth by D3wrestle.com, took care of Jonathan Flores in five minutes, 57 seconds by a 19-3 tally.
Sophomore Nate Mlodzic earned four points in his ninth victory of the year at 165 pounds, an 11-2 win over Aristide Serrano. At 149 pounds, freshman
Adam Becker (Helenville, Wis./Johnson Creek) picked up his sixth victory, a 10-5 decision.
UW-Whitewater resumes action this Saturday at Manchester University's Spartan Mat Classic in North Manchester, Ind. Competition begins at 8 a.m. Central Time.
