LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team dropped its first game Friday in the NCAA Division III Tournament, falling 3-2 against No. 12 St. Thomas (Minn.) at Lake Forest College.
The Warhawks (28-13 overall) will continue regional action Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in an elimination game against Aurora (Ill.).
Junior third baseman
Hannah Taylor (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) knocked a two-run home run down the left field line in the top of the fourth inning to provide the offense for UW-Whitewater.
The Tommies (39-6) plated a run in the bottom of the first inning on a first-and-third running situation, and added two in the third on a two-out, two-run single.
Freshman pitcher
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) took the loss, moving to 17-5 on the year. She scattered four hits in six innings of work and struck out four.
Freshman centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) added two hits and came around to score on Taylor's homer.
The Warhawks left five runners on base through the first three innings, but left none on in any of the final four frames. UW-Whitewater's last 10 hitters were retired in order.
