Related Links:Interactive Bracket The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team saw its postseason run come to an end Saturday night with a 62-45 setback against No. 10 Washington-St. Louis in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at WU Field House in St. Louis, Mo.
The Warhawks (20-8 overall) finished the season with their 15th national tournament appearance and eighth in the last nine years. The team also clinched its eighth 20-win season in the last nine years with Friday's 66-54 triumph over Bluffton (Ohio).
Senior guard
Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) tallied a team-high 12 points and, with a 3-pointer at the 2:17 mark of the third quarter, became both the 15th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and the program's all time leader in career 3-pointers made. She finished her career Saturday with 1,003 points and 204 made 3s.
Senior forward
Lisa Palmer (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. She finished her career tied for 13th on the program's all time rebounding list.
Sophomore forward
Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 10 rebounds, including four offensive.
UW-Whitewater finished the contest with 16 offensive rebounds, which led to 15 second-chance points. The team was limited to 25.9 percent shooting from the floor, a season low.
The Bears (22-5), who advance to the Round of 16 to face Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), shot 46.7 percent from the floor and 17-of-25 at the free-throw line.
Washington, which jumped out to a 12-3 advantage with 3:20 to play in the first quarter, never trailed in the game.
The Warhawks trailed by 13 with 3:47 remaining in the second quarter before ending the first half on a 10-2 run, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Reeves to bring the team within 31-26 heading into the locker room.
Palmer scored on UW-Whitewater's first possession of the third quarter to bring the team within one possession. Reeves brought the Warhawks to within 39-34 with her record setting 3-pointer to cap scoring in the period.
The Bears started the fourth quarter with a 13-1 run to put the game out of reach. Seniors
Maddie Bare (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) and
Jaya Perkins (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) tallied baskets in the final three minutes of regulation.
Forward
Emily Jensen (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East), the team's fifth and final senior, recorded one rebound in 10 minutes of action.
UW-Whitewater's second round berth in the NCAAs marked the 13th time in the team's 15 appearances that it won at least one game in the tournament.
