Related Links:Box Score Oshkosh, Wis. – No. 17 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team lost in a thriller against UW-Oshkosh by a score of 60-57 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at the Kolf Sports Center.
The Warhawks outrebounded the Titans 38-32 including 12 offensive rebounds to create 14 second-chance points and posted 20 points off the bench in the loss. UW-Whitewater moves to (19-5 overall, 8-5 WIAC) on the season.
No. 14 UW-Oshkosh (20-4 overall, 11-2 WIAC) was able to hold on for the win by creating 18 points off 13 Warhawk turnovers and shooting 90 percent (9-10) from the free-throw line.
Senior forward
Lisa Palmer (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) led the Warhawks with a career-high in points (21) and grabbed nine rebounds on the night. Sophomore guard
Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) tallied nine points, eight rebounds, and went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
UW-Whitewater had a slow start in this contest, getting down 9-0 in the first four minutes of play. The Warhawks first basket of the game came from sophomore guard
Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) at the 5:40 mark of the first quarter.
The Warhawks then went on a 9-2 run stretching over four minutes of play to close out the first quarter tied at 11.
In the second quarter the Warhawks and Titans went back and forth trading baskets along with the lead until they found themselves all tied up at 21 with 4:11 left in the quarter. The Titans then went on an 11-2 run to close out the half with the lead 32-23.
The Warhawks came out in the third clawing back to get back into this game. They did just that on a made 3-pointer by Palmer to get the game within one heading into the fourth quarter.
UW-Whitewater's first lead of the second half came on two made free-throws by junior guard
Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) with 8:49 left to go in the game. Over a two minute span neither team scored a point, until two made free-throws by the Titans.
Three key baskets by Palmer kept the Warhawks in the game late in the quarter to get them within two points with 27 seconds left. The Titans closed out the game by making 3-of-4 free-throws in the final seconds.
The Warhawks close out WIAC conference play this Saturday at home in Kachel Gymnasium where they will take on UW-Eau Claire. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
