The No. 16 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team saw its 20 game non-conference winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night in a 78-86 setback against Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
The Warhawks (8-1 overall) were cold offensively shooting just 34.5 percent from the field on 29-of-84 shots. UW-Whitewater did force 19 turnovers in the contest and turned those into 25 points.
Junior guard
Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had a career-night scoring a season-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go along with four rebounds and two steals. Senior guard
Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) was the only other Warhawk to reach double-figures in scoring with 13 points including two 3-pointers.
Sophomore
Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) posted a team best nine rebounds to go along with eight points and two steals. Freshman
Kaelynn Lesniak (Pewaukee, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) registered nine points on only three shots made and three made free-throws.
The Vikings (10-0 overall) built an eight-point lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter, but the Warhawks fought back to tie the game at 16 thanks to a 4-0 run by freshman guard
Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls).
Augustana built another eight-point lead early in the second quarter only for UW-Whitewater to claw their way back with three straight baskets by Smith, junior forward
Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran), and junior guard
Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) to make it a two-point game with just under six minutes to play in the half.
The Warhawks went on a 6-2 run in the final two minutes of the half to go into the locker room down ten.
Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter scoring 14 and 16 points apiece.
UW-Whitewater found its offensive touch in the final frame scoring 27 points, and tying the game on a made layup by Stewart and a made free-throw by Smith with 1:12 left to play.
The Vikings went on a 9-2 to close out the game in the final 47 seconds of the game to seal the victory.
The Warhawks return to action in nine days as they travel to the Capital University (Ohio) Tournament where they play Case Western University on Dec. 29th at 5 p.m. and Capital University or Olivet College on the 30th at 3 or 5 p.m.
