The No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team won five of 10 weight classes against UW-Platteville Saturday, but was defeated 21-17 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual in Platteville, Wis.
Senior
Zac Denny (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) and freshman
Mac Casella (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) posted major decisions at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively, to lead the Warhawks (3-3 overall, 2-1 WIAC).
Denny, who is ranked second in the nation by both D3wrestle.com and the National Wrestling Coaches Association, registered a four-point near fall near the end of the second period and en route to his ninth win of the season, a 14-3 margin.
Casella posted an escape in the third round and hung on for a 10-2 victory.
Juniors
Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy),
Austin Quartullo (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and sophomore
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) were also victorious Saturday.
Newman, ranked No. 1 by D3wrestle.com and No. 2 by the NWCA, recorded takedowns in the first and second periods on his way to a 5-2 triumph.
Quartullo tallied eight first-period points and was a 9-5 winner, and Bonomo turned a 4-2 deficit into an 8-4 triumph with six points in the third period.
The Warhawks return to action Jan. 5-6 at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind.
