The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team used strong shooting in the first half and maintained its advantage in the second half Saturday afternoon in an 80-64 victory over Kalamazoo (Mich.) at Kachel Gymnasium.
The Warhawks (6-0 overall) forced 22 turnovers, posting 27 points off the Hornets' miscues, and shot 31-of-46 from the free-throw line.
Junior guard
Chris Jones (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) totaled a team-best 18 points, including 11-of-13 shooting from the free-throw line, to go along with five rebounds for UW-Whitewater. Junior forward
Scotty Tyler (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) posted 10 of his 12 points in the first half and added five rebounds.
Freshman guard
Zach Knobloch (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) tallied nine points, and junior forward
Demetrius Woodley (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent) collected seven points, five rebounds and a team-high three steals.
The Warhawks jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Kalamazoo (2-6) and never trailed in the contest.
UW-Whitewater pushed its advantage all the way up to 34-15 with 5:04 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard
Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail). The Hornets whittled their deficit down to 36-26 with 3:09 on the clock thanks to an 11-2 run, but the Warhawks took a 13-point lead into halftime.
UW-Whitewater started the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 53-32 advantage at the 15:46 mark.
The Warhawks extended their lead to 24 following a 3-point play by Jones with 8:43 remaining before Kalamazoo chipped away at its deficit, narrowing UW-Whitewater's advantage to 71-59 with 1:50 on the clock.
Jones hit 5-of-6 free throws over the final 1:34 of regulation to help the Warhawks remain undefeated on the season.
UW-Whitewater continues its current six-game home stand Sunday at 5 p.m. against George Fox (Ore.).
