The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team competed against a scholarship school and experimented with several different lineup combinations Tuesday night in a 70-57 defeat at Division I Loyola Chicago in an exhibition contest at Gentile Arena in Chicago.
All 18 players who traveled played at least three minutes for the Warhawks, who were highly competitive against the Ramblers, who are members of the Missouri Valley Conference.
Junior guard
Niki Lazar (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) led UW-Whitewater with 11 points, including three 3-pointers, off the bench. Junior guard
Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) tallied 10 points, and junior forward
Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) posted eight points.
Sophomore forward
Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) registered five points and a team-best five rebounds.
The Warhawks shot 37.5 percent for the game and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.
UW-Whitewater led for most of the first quarter and doubled up Loyola, 22-11, following a layup by Meinert early in the second quarter.
The Ramblers tied the contest at 27-27 with 2:34 left in the half, but Lazar gave the Warhawks the lead back with a 3-pointer at the 2:13 mark.
Loyola took the lead for good with 3:35 remaining in the third, ending the quarter on a 14-2 run.
Thirteen different players scored for UW-Whitewater.
The Warhawks open the regular season Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. against Lakeland at Kachel Gymnasium in the Williams Center.
