Women’s Basketball Downs Simpson

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team remained undefeated for the season and increased its regular season non-conference win streak to 15 games Saturday with a 71-55 victory over Simpson (Iowa) in a non-conference contest at the UW-Eau Claire Tipoff Tournament.
 
The Warhawks (3-0 overall) made decisive runs in the second and third quarters, holding the Storm to 16 points combined in the periods after surrendering 21 in the first.
 
UW-Whitewater limited Simpson (1-1) to 33.3 percent shooting for the contest and made 42.9 percent on the offensive end, including a 48.3 percent clip in the second half.
 
Junior guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) tallied a game-high 24 points to go along with a team-beset nine rebounds to lead the Warhawks. Junior forward Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) collected 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, and junior guard Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) finished with six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
The Storm jumped out to a 16-9 advantage six minutes into the affair, UW-Whitewater ended the first quarter on a 12-5 run, including five points from senior guard Riley Stewart, to tie the game at 21-21.
 
In the second, sophomore guard Emily Kraft (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) capped a 6-0 run with a 3-pointer to make it 27-21 midway through the period. Simpson drew to within three by the 3:21 mark, but the Warhawks scored the final four points of the half on a jumper by freshman guard Camri Conley (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and two free throws by Trewyn.
 
UW-Whitewater started the third quarter on a 13-3 run, highlighted by five points from Meinert and a 3-pointer by Trewyn, to take a 43-29 advantage with 7:05 left in the frame. The Warhawks increased their lead to as many as 19 in the quarter.
 
The two teams traded baskets in the fourth and UW-Whitewater never led by fewer than 15 the rest of the way.
 
The Warhawks resume non-conference play Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Illinois Wesleyan.
