Related Links:Box ScoreRiver Falls, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team went on the road to take on UW-River Falls who are receiving national votes. The Warhawks dropped the contest by a score of 78-65 and move to (12-2, 1-2) on the season.
Three players scored in double figures for the Warhawks, all coming from the back court.
The Warhawks struggled shooting from the floor on Wednesday night, shooting just 38.1 percent. The Falcons (12-2, 3-0) shot 53.5 percent from the floor on 23-of-43 shooting. The Warhawks were out rebounded in the game by a 38-29 margin. UW-Whitewater forced 22 turnovers on the game, but couldn't overcome a fast start in the first two periods by the Falcons.
Senior guard
Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) knocked down four 3-pointers and was perfect from the free-throw line (2-2) en route to a 14 point effort. Sophomore guard
Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and senior guard
Jaya Perkins (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) both scored 13 points on the night. Smith added two rebounds and three assists, while Perkins had two rebounds and an assist.
Sophomore forward
Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and junior guard
Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) both scored six points coming off the bench for the Warhawks. Stewart was second on the team gathering five rebounds on the night.
After a slow start in the first quarter by the Warhawks and hot shooting by the Falcons, UW-Whitewater faced an up-hill climb the rest of the game. Coming out of halftime down 46-30, the Warhawks kept clawing their way back and got the score within eight points in the fourth quarter.
The Warhawks out-scored the Falcons in the fourth quarter by a 24-16 margin, but there wasn't enough time on the clock to complete the comeback. UW-River Falls put the game out of reach by hitting their free-throws down the stretch.
UW-Whitewater will look to get back on track this Saturday, Jan. 16th where they will take on UW-Lacrosse in the Kachel Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
