LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team wrapped up the 2015 regular season with two wins over Lake Forest Tuesday afternoon. The thirteenth ranked Warhawks shutout LFC 6-0 in the opener and 4-0 in the nightcap to improve to 32-6 this season.
The opener of the doubleheader began as a pitching duel. The hurlers held each opposing offense off the board until the fourth inning.
With one out in the top of the inning, senior
Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton) drew a walk. Junior
Maggie Hansen (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) singled in the next at bat and a bad throw put both runners in scoring position. Senior
Caitlin Snyder (Burlington/Catholic Central) brought in the first run of the game with a two-out, RBI single through the left side.
In the top of the fifth, freshman
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) got the offense going with a single through the right side. Senior
Deven DuCharme (Hudson/Hudson) hit a groundball to the pitcher but the two speedsters were too much for the LFC defense and both Warhawks were safe on their bases. Senior
Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) singled to center field in the next at bat to give UW-Whitewater a 2-0 lead.
UW-Whitewater added a hefty cushion in the top of the seventh with four runs on four hits. Jablonski led off the inning with a shot to center that cleared the fence. Just two batters later, Sporer followed suit and touched them all for the second round-tripper of the inning. Hansen drew a walk and senior
Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) notched a one-out double to left center to put two Warhawks in scoring position. Snyder brought in both runs trading places with Evangelista on second with a double to center field.
The Warhawk defense held for the final margin, 6-0.
UW-Whitewater tallied 11 hits in the game led by Snyder's 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Klotz and Jablonski each notched two hits in the game.
Senior righty
Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) fanned 13 Foresters while allowing just four hits for the complete game shutout. Houda is 15-3 this season in the circle.
GAME TWO RECAP
The UW-Whitewater offense put the pressure on right off the bat, pun intended, in game two.
Klotz opened the game with a single and stole second with one out. Jablonski took a pitch off her hip to put two runners on and sophomore
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) followed with another single to score Klotz from second. Sporer made it back-to-back singles with a base knock to right field to load the bases. Freshman
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) registered a smart at bat putting the ball in play to the right side of the field allowing another Warhawk to cross the plate for an early 2-0 lead.
After four scoreless innings, Ricci got Whitewater's bats going again with a single up the middle. Sporer followed suit with a single and advanced to second on the throw from the outfield to third base as Ricci slid in safely beating the tag. Swanson once again came up cluth with a groundball to the right side of the field. The second baseman bobbled it and recorded the out at first but not before the Warhawks added two runs to their total for the game.
Sporer and the UW-Whitewater defense stranded nine Foresters on base in the second game of the day to register the shutout win. Sporer went the distance allowing four hits while striking out seven to improve to 12-3.
Sporer also led the Warhawks offensively going 2-for-3 from the plate. Ricci added a 2-for-3 performance recording an RBI and a run scored.
The Warhawks will head to Eau Claire for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament beginning Friday. UW-Whitewater, the number two seed after sharing the conference title with the Blugolds, will face UW-Stout at 12 p.m. at Carson Park in Eau Claire.
