EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team fell to UW-Eau Claire 64-49 on the road Saturday night.
The Blugolds jumped out to 9-2 lead in the game with 14:28 on the clock. The Warhawks cut the lead down to three after a
Jaya Perkins (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) three-pointer, 11-8 at the 12:08 mark.
UW-EC responded with a 20-8 run over the next ten minutes to extend the lead to 15, 31-16.
Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) knocked down a three-pointer after a steal to narrow the deficit to 12. Then
Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) hit two free-throws with just over a minute left in the half to make it 31-21 but the Blugolds responded with two from the charity stripe to make it 33-21 at intermission.
Kate McKay (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) got the second half started for the Warhawks with two free-throws to make it 33-23. Two minutes later
Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) hit
Emily Jensen (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East) for a layup to bring the score to 36-25 but the Blugolds knocked down two three's in less than 30 seconds to force a Warhawk timeout.
UW-Whitewater put together a 7-0 run bolstered by an
Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) three-pointer and capped on a Maddie bare layin to make the score 42-32 with 13:54 left.
The Warhawks tried to narrow the gap from long range but the Blugolds continued to respond to seal the win.
The height of the Blugolds inside proved troublesome for the UW-Whitewater defenders. UW-EC outscored the Warhawks 32-12 on points in the paint.
Reeves led the Warhawks with 11 points on 3-for-9 from behind the arc and five rebounds.
Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) dished out a game-high six boards and recorded two steals.
UW-Whitewater will host UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, February 11 at 7 p.m. in Kachel Gym.
