Women's Basketball This Week: Warhawks Prepare for Final WIAC Games

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball program will prepare for their final two games of the regular season this week. The Warhawks take on the league-leader UW-Oshkosh on the road Wednesday before wrapping on the 2014-15 regular season at home against UW-Stout Saturday.

The Warhawks won two games last week to improve to 11-12 overall and 6-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Whitewater topped UW-Stevens Point 64-52 in Kachel Gym last Wednesday before heading to River Falls over the weekend.

Freshman forward Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran), the Warhawks' Player of the Week, registered her first collegiate double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead UW-Whitewater to a 74-67 win over the Falcons.

The Warhawks enter the final week of the regular season sixth in the WIAC standings. A UW-Whitewater win or UW-Stout loss Wednesday will guarantee the Warhawks entry into the WIAC Championship which features the top six teams in the league.

UW-Whitewater scores 65.7 points per game, fourth-best in the league, and allows 63.4 points by their opponents. The Warhawks shoot 32.8 percent from long range and 39.9 percent from the field, the second and fourth-best marks in the conference.

Junior shooting guard Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) still leads the WIAC from behind the three-point arc with 2.30 three's per contest. She has the second-best efficiency in the league from long range, 39.8 percent, and leads the Warhawks with 10.7 points per game, eleventh-most in the conference.

Freshman guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) adds 9.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, both top 20 numbers in the league. Freshman guard Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) has worked her way into the top 15 in assists averaging nearly two per game.

This week UW-Whitewater will visit league-leading UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Kolf Center.

The Titans, 19-4 overall, 11-3 in the WIAC and ranked No. 20 in the D3hoops.com poll (as of Feb. 8), are coming off of a 58-46 loss to UW-Superior on the road. Prior to the loss last Saturday, UW-O had won six straight.

UW-Oshkosh is 8-1 at home with their last home loss dating back to Jan. 17 in a 63-57 overtime loss to UW-Eau Claire.

The Titans and Warhawks met in the WIAC-opener back on Dec. 3 with UW-Oshkosh coming away with the 72-58 win. UW-Whitewater trailed by just, 35-30, at the half but shot just 33.3 percent (9-27) from the floor in second 20 minutes.

Sophomore guard Taylor Schmidt posted 17 points and three assists. Sophomore forward Alex Richard added 14 points and seven boards while junior guard Ashley Neustifter dropped in 10 points for the Titans. Oshkosh shot 50 percent (29-58) from the field and won the turnover battle, 11-19. The Titans lead the league in turnover margin at +4.78.

Trewyn led the Warhaawks with 17 points on a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and added seven boards, two assists and two steals. Freshman forward Kate McKay (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) added 10 points and six rebounds as the Warhawks shot 39.7 percent (23-58) from the floor.

The Titans spread the wealth with six scorers listed in the top 30 of the WIAC statistics. Schmidt leads UW-O with 11.0 points per game followed by freshman forward Eliza Campbell (9.0), senior forward Katelyn Kuehl (8.5), Richard (8.8), Neustifter (7.7) and junior forward Marissa Selner (7.5). Richard is tied for ninth-best in the league with 6.0 rebounds per outing.

UW-Oshkosh holds the third-best scoring offense averaging 66.9 points per game but also boasts the league's top defense allowing just 52.6 points per contest, a margin of +14.3 per game. The Titans are the most efficient team from the floor shooting 42.8 percent for field goals and have the best three-point defense in the WIAC allowing their opponents to make just 24.2 percent of their opportunities from behind the arc.

UW-Whitewater will wrap-up the regular season in Kachel Gym Saturday against UW-Stout at 3 p.m. The game has been designated as the Warhawks' annual Play4Kay fundraiser to support the fight against breast cancer.

The Blue Devils head into their Wednesday meeting with UW-Superior on a four-game losing streak.

UW-Stout is just 1-11 on the road this season and averages 60.9 points per game but gives up 67.8. The ninth-best shooting team in the league is led by sophomore guard/forward Jenna Goldsmith's 11.7 points per game, sixth-best in the league standings. Junior guard Kyleigh Hebert leads the conference in shooting efficiency at 55.8 percent averaging 9.1 points per contest and adds 1.43 blocks per game, third-best in the WIAC. Senior guard Katelynne Folkers is the most active Blue Devil on the glass averaging 7.1 rebounds per game.

Meinert and Trewyn each recorded one of their best games of the season against UW-Stout back on Jan. 10 in Menomonie. The two freshmen bolstered a second half comeback combining for 30 points and 10 boards in the second half.

UW-Whitewater overcame a 37-29 halftime deficit to top the Blue Devils 74-69. Meinert hit six of her seven shots from the field in the second half and went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line for 18 points in the final half. Trewyn scored 12 of her 20 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the second 20 minutes. Meinert registered 22 points in the contest, the top mark for a Warhawk this season.

Saturday's game will feature fundraising opportunities including the sale of pink Play4Kay t-shirts for $10. All proceeds will go directly to the organization. UW-Whitewater will also recognize a number of breast cancer survivors at halftime of the game.
