Hot Shooting Sends Women’s Hoops to 4-0

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team remained unbeaten for the 2015-16 season Tuesday night, defeating Illinois Wesleyan 96-79 in a non-conference affair at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks shot a sizzling 58.2 percent for the game, the ninth-best mark in program history and best shooting performance since Feb. 20, 2010, when the team shot 60 percent in a victory over UW-Superior.

Sophomore guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) posted a career high 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 9-of-10 at the free throw line. She also added a game-high seven rebounds and four assists.

Senior guard Jaya Perkins (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) tallied 14 points and four assists, while sophomore forward Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) collected 13 points and three steals off the bench. Senior guard Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) added 12 points.

UW-Whitewater made 25-of-29 free throws for the contest and led 53-29 at the half after shooting 63.6 percent in the period. The team also forced 24 turnovers by the Titans (2-1).

The Warhawks ended the first quarter on an 11-4 run over the final 3:26 of the period to take a 26-19 lead at the first break.

UW-Whitewater continued its momentum into the second, starting the quarter on an 11-0 run, highlighted by five points from Trewyn, to lead 37-19 at the 6:32 mark. The team expanded its advantage to 25 with 2:42 on the clock on a jumper by Perkins.

An 8-2 run to start the third period gave the Warhawks their largest lead of the game to that point at 61-31 with 8:13 left in the quarter. A 3-pointer by junior guard Andrea Olsen (East Troy/East Troy), who finished with eight points and four assists, made it 70-39 midway through the period.

Illinois Wesleyan made a run to reduce its deficit to 22 by the end of the quarter, but UW-Whitewater never allowed the Titans to get closer than 17 the rest of the way.

The Warhawks finished with double-digit advantages in points off turnovers (32-14), points in the paint (42-30) and bench points (39-25).

UW-Whitewater resumes non-conference play Saturday at Carroll. Tipoff in Waukesha is slated for 3 p.m.
