No. 1 Warhawks Reach Semifinals at NWCA National Duals

The top-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team opened the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals Friday with a pair of victories in Fort Wayne, Ind.
 
After receiving a first-round bye, the Warhawks (9-0 overall) downed 24th-ranked Loras (Iowa) by a 32-9 score, then concluded the day with a 24-12 triumph over No. 10 Augsburg (Minn.).
 
With the wins, UW-Whitewater will take on No. 4 Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the semifinals, with the winner to take on either No. 2 Wartburg (Iowa) or third-ranked Wabash (Ind.) in the championship dual at 3:30 p.m.
 
Seniors Elroy Perkin (Greenfield/Whitnall), Ryan Aprahamian (Mukwonago/Mukwonago), junior Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel) and sophomore Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) each posted a 2-0 record for the day to lead the Warhawks.
 
Siefert, the nation's consensus No. 1 at 197 pounds, registered two pins for the day, highlighted by a 26-second fall against Augsburg's Matt Hechsel, the eight-ranked wrestler at 197 according to the NWCA.
 
Perkin (149 pounds) and Aprahamian (184) tallied major decisions against Loras and decisions against Augsburg. Perkin, ranked second by the NWCA and third by D3wrestle.com, downed consensus No. 9 Will Keeter of Augsburg in a 6-3 decision. Aprahamian, slotted ninth by the NWCA, defeated Augsburg's Tom Teigen by a 5-2 decision.
 
Newman, ranked ninth at 174 pounds, pinned Eric Hensel of Augsburg in just 46 seconds.
 
Other winners against Loras included senior Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East) and freshman Connor Price (Muskego, Wis./Muskego). Pruett outlasted Michael Triplett by a 3-1 decision at 133, and Price pinned Greg Vance in 6:01 at 165. Senior Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon) earned six points with a forfeit.
 
Juniors Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) and Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) each recovered from losses against nationally-ranked opponents from Loras with victories against Augsburg. Adcock, ranked No. 8 by D3wrestle.com, bounced Marcus Hamer by a 5-2 decision. Gerszewski earned a 5-2 decision over Grant Parker.
