Katie Fiorilli (Solon, OH/Solon) won three events to lead the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team to a 183.275-177.850 win over UW-Stout in the 2015 season opener Friday evening.
The Warhawks won four of the five events en route to the total team victory. Fiorilli took balance beam, floor exercise and all-around honors while teammate
Cici Talcott (Kentwood, MI/East Kentwood) won the vault.
Opening the evening on the uneven bars, UW-Whitewater's
Stephanie Cross (Arizona City, AZ/Casa Grande Union), a specialist on the apparatus, took second with a score of 9.350 followed by Fiorilli's 9.250 in third.
Caroline Holverson (Kenosha, WI/Westosha Central) notched an 8.950 for fifth to bolster the Warhawks' team total of 43.925 in the event.
With the first meet jitters out of the way, UW-Whitewater posted their best event of the night with a 47.375 off the vault. Talcott posted the top scoring performance on the apparatus of the night, a 9.550. Pickett followed in second with a 9.525. Lee and Fiorilli vaulted to scored of 9.450 to tie for third and Chloe Rehberg (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) registered a 9.400 to tie for sixth.Â
The Warhawks continued to pick up steam on the floor exercise as Fiorilli continued to bolster the Warhawks' in the season opener with a 9.500 to win the floor. Heuer and teammate Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) tied for second with 9.425 each. The Warhawks' wrapped up the meet on the balance beam. UW-Whitewater swept the top six spots in the event led by Fiorilli's 9.550. Event specialist
Kristen Shackleton (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central) posted a 9.350 and
Alexis Williams (Marietta, GA/Blessed Trinity Catholic) added a 9.325 for second and third respectively. In fourth,
Megan Love (Henrico, VA/Godwin) scored a 9.300 and
Steffi Heuer (Clarksville, TN/Middle College at APSU) and
Hannah Lee (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville) had matching scores of 9.025 to tie for fifth. The Warhawks totaled 46.550 in the event, topping the Blue Devils by nearly three points.
Fiorilli led the all-arounders with a total of 37.750 in the meet. Lee also competed on all four events for the Warhawks compiling a total of 35.075 for fourth.
The Warhawks will head for Knoxville, Tennessee to compete in the Ozone Invitational next week. UW-Whitewater will compete against three NCAA Division I institutions including the University of Alaska, Bowling Green State and Brigham Young Saturday, January 17 beginning at 8 p.m.
