The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team will host its annual breast cancer awareness meet Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. in Kris Russell Volleyball Arena. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be added to money raised from the team's 5k run/walk in the fall and donated to Unite for HER.
Founded by Sue Weldon, a long-time gymnastics coach and breast cancer survivor, Unite for HER is a nonprofit organization seeking to educate, empower and restore. As part of their mission, Unite for HER seeks to educate women of all ages about how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent disease; empower women through volunteer work and grants, as well as, team with hospitals to help patients with breast cancer through complementary therapies. Each year, Unite for HER sponsors the Pink Invitational, a meet featuring nearly 3,000 young gymnasts, which has raised over $1 million to help promote and finance additional events and outreach. All donations received by the organization go directly toward women affected by breast cancer.Â
A number of promotions will take place as the Warhawks take on UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon. For every score of 9.3 or higher, buckets will be passed around for donations. T-shirts will also be available for a $10 donation to the cause. All proceeds raised throughout the meet Saturday will go directly to Unite for HER.
