Gymnasts Third in DI-Dominated Ozone Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnnastics team finished third of four teams in the 2015 Ozone Collegiate Classic featuring three Division I institutions. 

The Warhawks posted a team total of 189.975, the seventh highest team total in program history, topping Division I University of Alaska's 188.850 in the meet. Brigham Young walked away with the Ozone title with a total of 193.075 and Bowling Green State finished second with a score of 191.175.

Opening the meet on the uneven bars, Cici Talcott (Kentwood, MI/East Kentwood) led the Warhawks with a performance scoring 9.6, ninth best of the 24 gymnasts in the event. Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) added a 9.55 for twelfth. Katie Fiorilli (Solon, OH/Solon), Caroline Holverson (Kenosha, WI/Westosha Central) and Hannah Lee (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville) finished back-to-back-to-back in 14th, 15th and 16th with scores of 9.45, 9.275 and 9.25 respectively. UW-Whitewater total in the event, 47.125, ties for the eight best in the Warhawk gymnastic record book. 

Event specialist Kristen Shackleton (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central) and Lee bolstered UW-Whitewater's balance beam performance tying for fifth with scores of 9.575. Pickett and Fiorilli notched 9.525's to tie for 10th and Steffi Heuer (Clarksville, TN/Middle College at APSU) added a 9.0 to give the Warhawks a total of 47.200 in the event, tenth best in UW-Whitewater history.

The Warhawks moved on to their best event of the night, the floor exercise, for the third rotation. UW-Whitewater scoring five combined for a total of 48.350, the best of any team in the meet and the third best in Warhawk history. Pickett led the charge with the top scoring floor routine of the invitational notching a 9.75, tied for sixth best in the record book. Talcott's 9.7 tied for fourth in the event and Fiorilli registered a 9.675 to tie for seventh in the field of 24 gymnasts. Rounding out the scoring five was Lee in 13th with a score of 9.625 and Lewa Evans (Milwaukee, WI/Whitefish Bay) tied for 14th with a score of 9.6.

In the final rotation of the night, the Warhawks took to the vault. Chloe Rehberg (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) and Evans were the top vaulters for UW-Whitewater finishing 10th and 11th respectively with scores of 9.6 and 9.55. Fiorilli added a 9.525 to tie for 13th. Pickett pitched in a 9.4 and Lee added a 9.325 to the Warhawks' event total.

Two Warhawks finished in the top three of the all-around competition. Pickett recorded a total of 38.225, second-best in the field of 10 gymnasts that competed in all four events in the meet, followed by Fiorilli's 38.175 for third. Lee's four-event total registered 37.775 for sixth in the competition. 

UW-Whitewater will host their first home meet of 2015 Saturday, Jan. 24 beginning at 4 p.m. in Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in the Williams Center. The Warhawks will recognize the UW-Whitewater parents and 10.0 Club members over the course of the evening.
