Balkin Breaks Record; Warhawks Top Titans

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The UW-Whitewater men's tennis team improved to 17-7 with an 8-1 win over UW-Oshkosh in La Crosse on Friday.  The win is the fifth in a row for the Warhawks who are ranked seventh in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.  The Titans, ranked nineteenth in the Central Region, fall to 12-7.

Byron Balkin (Madison/Memorial) became the all-time winningest player in men's tennis history by winning at one doubles and one singles.  He now has 167 combined wins in singles and doubles to go ahead of Alex Lowe (2006-09) who had 165.  Balkin won 6-2, 6-2 at one singles and paired up with Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) to remain perfect when playing together, 5-0, with an 8-6 win at one doubles.

Martin Beck (Minneapolis/South) won his eleventh consecutive singles match to improve to 12-2 this season.  He topped Aidan Sauberlich at four singles 6-1, 6-4.  Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) improved to 9-2 in singles play with a straight sets win over Jason Alexander at five singles.  Brian Klein (Brookfield/East) and Cam Laktash (Crystal Lake, IL/South) also won in straight sets at three, and six singles respectively.

Beck teamed up with Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) for another win at two doubles.  The tandem topped Oshkosh 8-6 to improve to 6-1 this season.

The Warhawks will face the other two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools that sponsor men's tennis on Saturday in La Crosse.  UW-W will face UW-La Crosse at 9 am and then play UW-Eau Claire at 1 pm.
