Warhawks Fall to #13 Titans in WIAC Opener

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball fell to UW-Oshkosh, ranked thirteenth in the most recent D3hoops.com poll, 72-58 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night in Kachel Gym. Freshman guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) tied for game high honors with 17 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe in the second half, and seven rebounds to lead the Warhawks. 

The Titans opened the game with the hot hand making 14 of their first 18 shots from the field to take a nine point advantage, 21-12 with 11:13 left in the first half. UW-Oshkosh led by ten, 31-21 with 3:10 left when the Warhawk defense put the pressure on.

UW-Whitewater forced three turnovers and capitalized on the offensive side with a 9-2 run bolstered by two layups and a three-pointer from Trewyn to pull with three, 33-30 with just over a minute left in the half. UW-Oshkosh posted the final bucket of the half to make the score 35-30 in favor of the Titans at intermission.

The Warhawks outscored UW-Oshkosh 24-20 in the pain and 12-4 on second chance points in the first 20 minutes. UW-Whitewater shot 45% (14-31) from the floor while the Titans posted a field goal percentage of 54% (15-28). 

UW-Oshkosh made their first seven field goals of the second half to extend the lead to 11, 47-36 with 16:23 on the clock. The advantage hovered around ten for the next nine minutes.

With the score showing 58-46, UW-Whitewater went on a 10-2 run to pull to within four, 60-56 with 3:31 remaining but the Titans answered with seven point spurt to push the lead back to double figures. Eight of the Titans' last 12 points came from the free throw line.

UW-Whitewater won the battle on the boards in the second half, 21-15. UW-Oshkosh shot 47% (14-30) compared to the Warhawks' 33% (9-27) in the final half of the game. 

Freshman center Kate McKay (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) joined Trewyn in double figures with ten points and added six rebounds. Sophomore forward Lisa Palmer (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) posted nine points and added five rebounds including three on the offensive glass. 

Taylor Schmidt led UW-Oshkosh with 17 points followed by Alex Richard with 14 and Ashley Neustifter added 10.

The Warhawks head to Platteville to take on the Pioneers Saturday, December 6 at 7 pm.
