Shklyar, Osborne Out of NCAA Tourney

UW-Whitewater lost in the first round of singles and doubles play at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Individual Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan Thursday.  UW-W sophomore Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) lost to University of Redlands (CA) sophomore Patrick Lipscomb 3-6. 6-2, 6-4 in an afternoon session.  Shklyar teamed up with senior Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) for doubles play Thursday night, where the Warhawk duo lost to Robert Kjellberg and Artsiom Prostak of North Carolina Wesleyan, the third seed in the sixteen team field, 6-3. 6-1. 

Lipscomb, twice All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is ranked fifth in the West Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.  He advances to the round of sixteen to play Hayden White of Washington and Lee University, a upset winner of seventh seeded Joey Fritz of Amherst College, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. 

Shklyar, seventh in the ITA's Central Region ranking, finished the year with a 15-11 mark in singles play.

Shklyar and Osborne, the third ranked doubles team in the ITA Central Region, finish the season with a 15-10 record.  Kjellberg and Prostak, 21-9 and number one in the Atlantic South Region, advance to play Matt Bettles and Rob Crampton of Bates College, 6-4, 6-2 winners over Frankie Allinson and Max Sabel of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

Shklyar and Osborne led UW-Whitewater to its sixth consecutive berth in the NCAA III team championship, where the Warhawks, ranked twenty-fourth, lost in the second round to Gustavus Adolphus College.  The University of Redlands, thirteenth, also qualified for the team tournament, and lost in the second round to Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges. 

The selection of Osborne and Shklyar marks the second time since UW-W joined the NCAA in 1980 that UW-W has had players qualify for the national meet. Byron Balkin (Madison/Memorial) (also a member of this year's team) and Osborne earned a spot in the 2011 individual tournament, and lost in the first round of doubles play.  The NCAA III Men's Tennis Individual Championships consist of the top thirty-two players in the singles draw and sixteen doubles teams.

The brackets for the NCAA III Men's Tennis Individual Championships hosted by Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan have been released. Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) will face Patrick Lipscomb of Redlands in the opening round and will join teammate Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) in the doubles competition to take on Robert Kjellberg and Artsiom Prostak of North Carolina Wesleyan.

Shklyar, 15-10 overall and 12-8 in dual matches this season, will meet Lipscomb, 21-7 overall and 16-5 in dual matches, for the first time this season Thursday. The opening round of 32 will not begin before 10:00 am Thursday.

On the doubles side, Osborne and Shklyar are 15-9 this season for the Warhawks. Their foes in the round of 16, Kjellberg and Prostak, received the number three seed in the championships and are 20-9 this season. The doubles competition starts Thursday afternoon after 4:00 pm.

Matches are scheduled to be played at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium and Western Michigan University's Sorenson Courts. Poor weather conditions may force competition indoors and scheduled match times will be adjusted accordingly. Kalamazoo College has posted a championship website that will have all updated and important information listed as necessary.

Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) and Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) have received bids to compete in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship Tournament May 23-25 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Shklyar and Osborne are the only Wisconsin collegians picked for the field, which includes 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.

Shklyar will compete in both singles and doubles play.  He has played at one singles all season for Whitewater, compiling a 14-10 record overall.  Shklyar will also play in the doubles tourney, with partner Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central).  The duo has fashioned a 15-8 record that includes an eight match win streak.  Whitewater's number one doubles team is 9-1 in their last ten matches. 

Shklyar and Osborne will also play with the Warhawk men's team, which will make its seventh consecutive NCAA III championship touranment appearnce.  UW-W has advanced to the second round five times, and made it to the third round in 2011.  UW-W is ranked twenty-fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III poll.

UW-W has played the most challenging schedule in school history this school year.  The preparation for postseason play included four Division I opponents and seven matches against Division III schools ranked in the ITA poll.
