Carthage College took its first step in the NCAA III women's basketball tournament with a 72-55 win over Thomas More College in a first round game played in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Deadlocked at 28-28 at halftime, the Lady Red closed out the game with a 14-3 run that ended the Saints' 24-game win streak. Senior guard Stephanie Kuzmanic paced Carthage with 24 points, 12 in each half, with 8-13 shooting that included 4-7 threes and 4-4 at the line. Sophomore forward Jenny Burgoyne led Thomas More with 17 points
Carthage, 24-4, will face the winner of Friday's second game, matching host UW-Whitewater, 21-6, and Wisconsin Lutheran College 25-2, Saturday at 7:00 in UW-W's Kachel Gym in Williams Center. Thomas More ends the season 27-2.
