Warhawks Fall in Battle of Ranked Teams

Box Score LAS VEGAS - The UW-Whitewater women's basketball team, ranked eighth in the latest D3hoops.com poll, fell to #16 Carthage 91-77 in the D3hoops.com Classic Sunday afternoon in South Point Arena. The Warhawks are 8-2 this season, Carthage is 9-2. 

The Lady Reds posted 50 points in the paint in the game, compared to 18 for the Warhawks, and had a 45-35 advantage on the glass. UW-W scored 17 points off of 13 turnovers in the contest. 

Whitewater jumped out ahead early, 6-2 at the 18:57 mark, courtesy of back-to-back three's from Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) but it was all Carthage from then on. A 12-2 run by the Lady Reds made the score 14-8 with 16:21 left. With Carthage leading 24-16, the Lady Reds rattled off 14 points in a row to extend the margin to 22, 38-16 with less than 10 minutes left in the half. The Warhawks responded with a 17-1 run to narrow the gap to six, 39-33, with 2:15 showing on the clock. Carthage wrapped up the first 20 minutes with the last eight points of the half to head into the locker room with a 47-33 advantage.

UW-W shot 38% from the field (11-29) compared to 51% for Carthage (19-37). Reeves was perfect, 5-5, from long range to lead all scorers at the break with 15 points and matched the first half high with four rebounds. 

The Warhawks whittled the Carthage lead down to eight, 67-59 with 7:44 left after Reeves dropped in two free throws but that was as close as Whitewater would get. Trailing late in the game the Warhawks were forced to foul leading to the final 91-77.

UW-W finished the game shooting 38% from the field adding 9-20 from downtown. Carthage shot 52% from the floor and were 7-15 from three point range. 

Reeves led all players with 22 points including 6-9 for three's and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) posted 15 with five boards and Chelsea Gieseke (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) joined in double figure scoring with 11. Carthage had five players in double digits led by Michelle Wenzel's 20 points and eight rebounds. 

The Warhawks will wrap up play in the D3hoops.com Classic with a game against Ohio Northern Monday at 4:00 pm CST.
