Box Score MADISON, Wis. - The fourth ranked Warhawk women's basketball team won their fourth consecutive road game of 2013-14 topping Edgewood 91-71.
UW-W outscored the Eagles by 18 points, 44-26, in the paint and posted 18 fastbreak points compared to just four for EC. Whitewater's bench players added 21 points in the game, ten more than the extras for Edgewood.
Whitewater opened the game with an 8-0 run and the margin quickly hit double figures at the 15:46 mark with UW-W ahead 12-2. The lead fluctuated around the ten point mark until a 6-0 Warhawk run extended the lead to 18, the largest of the half, 28-10 with 9:17 remaining. A 12-2 run two minutes later narrowed the gap to eight, 30-22 with 6:35 left in the half but Whitewater pushed the lead back to 15 with the next seven points. Edgewood whittled the lead to seven with 1:14 remaining but
Katie Burton (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) gave the Warhawks a double digit lead, 48-38 on a three pointer to head into intermission.
The Warhawks shot 93% from the free throw line, 14-15 compared to 9-12 for Edgewood. Burton led all players with 13 points in the first twenty minutes including 3-4 behind the arc.
UW-W came out of halftime with hot hands pushing the advantage to 19 points after an 11-2 run made the score 59-40 with 16:43 showing on the scoreboard. Edgewood narrowed the lead to 12 at the 12:11 mark but that was as close as the Warhawk defense would allow. Whitewater's lead surpassed the 20 point mark at 8:51 after
Andrea Olsen (East Troy/East Troy)'s layup made it 77-56. The largest lead of the game was recorded at 1:15 with the score 91-67. The Eagles scored the last four points of the game for the final margin 91-71.
Whitewater posted 14 more points in the paint in the second half than their opponent and added an eight point advantage off fastbreak scoring.
Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) matched Burton's first half output in the second twenty minutes with 13 points on 3-4 from three point range.
Amy Mandrell (Forsyth, IL/Maroa-Forsyth) led all players in the game with 18 points including a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line and seven boards.
Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) added 16 and Burton finished with 14. Reeves scored all of her points in the second half and
Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North) totaled 13 including a 7-7 showing from the charity stripe.
Kaitlyn Thill (Belgium/Ozaukee) added six assists and five steals to her nine points for the Warhawks.
UW-Whitewater will play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season Wednesday, November 27. The Warhawks are set to host Illinois Wesleyan with tipoff scheduled for 6:00.
