Six First Place Finishes at Art Peterson Invitational

The UW-Whitewater men's tennis team wrapped up the Art Peterson Invitational in Macomb, Illinois Saturday with six first place, three second place, two third place, and three fourth place finishes in the event that featured nine singles draws and four doubles draws.  The tournament spanned two days and featured eight teams, including several NCAA Division I and II schools: UW-Whitewater, Lindenwood University, Olivet Nazarene University, Valparaiso University, Roosevelt University, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Truman State University, Western Illinois University.

In the number four singles draw it was an all UW-W final with Andrew McGlashen and Ben Klein going head-to-head in the final.  McGlashen came away victorious 6-4, 7-6 (8) to finish the draw 3-0 while Klein finished 2-1.

Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) won the number six singles draw defeating Tim Worley (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) of Western Illinois 6-2, 6-1.  Humphreys was 3-0 at the invite with wins over individuals from Olivet and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) took the title in the number seven singles draw defeating Brett Furmanski of Western Illinois 6-0, 6-4.  Bisbee defeated players from Truman and Valparaiso en route to the championship.

UW-W earned the crown in the number one doubles draw when Byron Balkin (Madison/Memorial) and Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) paired up to defeat a tandem from the University of Missouri-St. Louis 8-6 in the championship.  Balkin and Osborne defeated Truman State in round one and Lindenwood in the semifinals.

McGlashen and Kevin Friend (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) teamed up to win the number three doubles draw 8-3 over Western Illinois.  The pair defeated Roosevelt University in round one and Lindenwood University in the semis.

Another all UW-W final took place at the number four singles draw with Cam Laktash (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and Brian Klein (Brookfield/East) defeating Ben Klein and Humphreys 9-7.

Osborne earned a second place finish in the five singles draw to go along with his title at one doubles.  Osborne defeated Mitch Granger of Western Illinois in the final.

Kevin Friend (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) was a third place finisher at nine singles and Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) teamed up with Andrew Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) to take third in the number two doubles draw.

Balkin, Shklyar, and Bayliss all earned fourth place finishes at the one, two, and three singles draws respectively.

The bulk of the men's tennis season occurs in the spring, but the Warhawks will compete again this fall at the ITA Regional Championship in St. Peter, Minnesota beginning on September 28.
