Win Over #10 ONU Highlights 3-0 Olivet Duals

The UW-Whitewater wrestling team, fifth in the D3wrestle.com poll, highlighted a 3-0 mark at the Olivet Duals hosted by Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan with a 39-3 win over tenth-ranked Ohio Northern University Saturday.   Whitewater also defeated Heidelberg College 19-12 and Alma College 30-9.

Whitewater won nine of ten weight classes in opening the duals with a win over ONU.  The only loss came at 174 pounds, where Warhawk sophomore Ryan Aprahamian (Mukwonago/Mukwonago) lost to Kyle Kwiat, the number one ranked wrestler in the class in Division III, 5-0.  Aprahamian came back to contribute wins in both of the Whitewater's remaining matches.

A pair of sophomores led the Warhawks Saturday.  Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East), 125 pounds, and 285-pounder Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon), both went undefeated Saturday.  Pruett and Edgren both also had a pin in the three matches, as Pruett moved his record on the season to 7-3.  Edgren was making his first appearance on the mat of the season.

UW-W used a combination of wrestlers to go undefeated at 141 pounds and 184.  Jake Fredrickson, eighth in the d3wrestle.com class ranking, contributed a pin in the ONU match and a decision against Heidelberg before teammate Garrett Whitehead added a win at 141 versus Alma.   Andrew Pettit (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) and Josh Regazzi swept the 184 pound matches, with Pettit winning in the Ohio Northern and Heidelberg matches, Regazzi in the Alma match.

Whitewater had a winning record at nine of ten weights.  Grant Sutter (Dodgeville/Dodgeville), ranked fourth by d3wrestle.com, went 2-1 at 133; Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) was 2-1 at 149; Kegan Arthur (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) 2-1 at 157; and Adam Zeh (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) 2-1 at 165.

The Warhawk wrestling team split the squad Saturday, with another group competing in the Concordia (Wis.) Open in Mequon.  There was no team scores kept in the tournament.

Elroy Perkin (Greenfield/Whitnall) led UW-W wrestlers at the tourney, wrestling an incredible nine matches in one day, going 7-2 to place fourth at 149 pounds.  Three of Perkin's wins came by pin.  UW-W's Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) piled up a 6-2 record as he rolled into the fifth place match at 141 pounds, but fell to Adam Yde leaving the tournament with a sixth place finish and a record of 6-3.

UW-Whitewater will participate in the Wisconsin Open hosted by UW-Parkside December 1.  The next home match for the Warhawks will be Friday, January 25 at 7:00 with UW-Eau Claire visiting Williams Center for the annual alumni match.
