Wrestlers Sixth in the National Duals

After a 2-1 start on the first day of competition, the eighteenth ranked Warhawk wrestlers opened day two in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Springfield, Illinois with a 20-15 win over twenty-fourth ranked Mount Union. In the bout for fifth place, UW-W faced tenth ranked Olivet for the second time in the competition and lost a close battle 18-16. Sixteen teams competed in the Division III bracket, and fifteen of those schools are ranked in the Brute/adidas NWCA III poll

The Warhawks battled in the fifth place bout but fell just short to Olivet 18-16. The loss caps Whitewater's competition in the National Duals with a 3-2 record over the two day dual tournament.

UW-W's Jake Fredricksen (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock), ranked seventh at 133 pounds, recorded two wins in Sunday's competition including wrestling up a weight class against Olivet. Third ranked Corey Anderson (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) was pinned for the first time this season in the first bout of the day, just his second loss, but bounced back with win over a different foe from the first time the teams met in the competition.  Cedric Gibson (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) upset the only other ranked opponent in the two matches Whitewater competed in Sunday, with a 7-4 decision in the 165 pound weight class against Olivet's James Myers, sixth in Division III.

The Warhawks will travel to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to compete in the Budd Whitehill Duals Friday-Saturday, January 13-14.  UW-Whitewater's next home meet will be against UW-Oshkosh on January 20, with a 7 pm start.

Day One Recap
Whitewater, eighteenth in the national poll, lost to number ten Olivet College 19-13, then came back with a 36-6 win over Rhode Island College, and closed the day with 19-5 victory over thirteenth-ranked Concordia University-Morehead.  The Warhawks will continue the tournament at with a 9:00 a.m. match against Mount Union, twenty-fourth in the national ranking, and conclude the tourney wrestling for fifth or seventh place at 1:00.

The Warhawks fell to tenth ranked Olivet College 19-13 in the first round of the National Duals Saturday morning in Springfield.

All of the wrestlers ranked in the Division III rating system came out on top in the Olivet match.  Whitewater's Jake Fredrickson is seventh at 133 and teammate Corey Anderson (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) is third in the 285 class.  James Myers is sixth at 165 and Olivet teammate Trevor Tyler is seventh at 174.

Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Rhode Island 36-6 in the second round of the National Duals Saturday afternoon in Springfield.

Three of four nationally ranked wrestlers won in the Whitewater - Concordia (Morehead) match.  Anderson for UW-W, Daron Hohbein is number two at 133 and Nathan Schmitz seventh at 197 for Concordia.  The match at 133 pounds, pitting Hohbein against Whitewater's Fredrickson, was won by Hohbein 2-1 in overtime.

UW-Whitewater's next home meet will be against UW-Oshkosh on January 20, with a 7 pm start.
