Warhawks Pull Away from Edgewood

Box Score The Warhawk women's basketball team used a 9-0 run to close the first half and an 11-2 run to open the second in a 66-49 win over Edgewood College at the Todd Wehr Edgedome Wednesday night.

Whitewater held a slim lead through the first ten minutes of the game, with Edgewood taking its first lead, 15-13, on a Dareon Henderson basket at 7:19.  Sam Quandt (Hayward/Hayward)'s three-pointer at 6:28 put UW-W back in front 16-15, but two free throws by Chelsey Watkins put the Eagles back in front 19-18 at 3:59.  That was the last time Edgewood led in the game.  UW-W closed the half with an 9-0 finish to lead 27-19.

Whitewater shot 50% from the floor in the half, Edgewood 40%.  UW-W was 2-8 from beyond the arc, EC 1-7.  Neither team spent much time at the free throw line, with the Warhawks hitting 3-5 and the Eagles 2-2.  Edgewood had 14 turnovers in the first twenty minutes, Whitewater eight.  UW-W senior forward Cortney Kumerow (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) led both teams with six points in the first half.

The second half began like the first half ended, with UW-W on a run, this time 11-2 for a 38-21 Whitewater lead with 17:38 showing on the clock.  With the score 40-24 at 17:03 both teams had a hard time finding the basket, combining for two points over the next 3:36.  Whitewater built a 24 point margin, 52-28 at 11:05, and Edgewood closed that gap to sixteen three times (57-41 at 4:41, 61-45, 63-47) as UW-W got fifteen players into the action.

Whitewater wound up shooting 54% for the game, and the Warhawks' press wore down the Eagles to 29% and 26 turnovers.  Both teams were 3-13 from long range, and Edgewood had a seven point bulge at the free throw line (18-23 to 11-17), but UW-W made 26 field goals and Edgewood just 14.

Sophomore guard Katie Burton (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) led a trio of Warhawks in double figures, with 14.  Sophomore guard Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) and Kumerow added 12 apiece.  Sophomore guard Kaitlyn Thill (Belgium/Ozaukee) dished out a game high seven assists, and senior forward Jamie Swanson (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) topped UW-W with five rebounds.  Watkins, a sophomore guard, led Edgewood with 12 points, and junior forward Alison Tobin took game honors with six rebounds.

Edgewood is 4-8.
