Warhawks Go 3-0 in Border Brawls

UW-Whitewater, ranked twelfth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, went 3-0 in the 2012 Border Brawls, topped  hosted by UW-W in the Kachel Gym of the Williams Center Saturday.  UW-W defeated Simpson College 36-3, Trine University 36-3, and concluded with a 31-8 win over thirteenth-ranked Elmhurst College.

Mike Schloegel (Joliet, IL/Lincoln-Way Community) raised his record to 15-5 with a forfeit win at 125 to get Whitewater off to a 6-0 lead.  Jake Fredricksen (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock), now 21-2 and ranked sixth at 133 in the NWCA rankings, gave Whitewater a 10-0 lead with his 17-4 win over Simpson's Davin Rausch.  Simpson's lone points came from Jeff Sands' 5-2 win at 141 over Elroy Perkin (Greenfield/Whitnall), giving Whitewater a 10-3 advantage.  Brian Lewis (Verona/Verona) at 149 started a seven match win streak by Whitewater, defeating Stephen Blayer 6-3, pushing Whitewater's advantage to 13-3.  Corey Schmidt (Homewood, IL/Homewood Flossmoor) defeated Brian Haynes at 157 4-1 for a 16-3 Whitewater lead.  Cedric Gibson (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) notched his twentieth win of the season and added four points to Whitewater's score with a major decision to make it 20-3 by defeating Cory Stratton 20-6 at 165.  Reid Dickerson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) defeated Justin Bruce 5-3 at 174 to increase the Warhawks' lead to 23-3.  David Dwyer (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) won his eighteenth match of the season 15-6 over Simpson's Taylor Witzel at 184, giving Whitewater a 27-3 advantage.  Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), now 5-2 on the season after his 5-2 win over Jared Bevins, gave Whitewater a 30-3 lead.  At the heavyweight class, Corey Anderson (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) delivered the final blow by scoring his fifth pin of the season on Simpson's Tony Saucedo 0:53 seconds into the match, sealing the 36-3 win for Whitewater.

A closer look belies the impression given by the final score.  Whitewater won nine of the ten matches, but six Warhawk wins came by two points or less.  David Dwyer (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) knocked off a ranked wrestler for the second day in row, with his 4-3 win over Ryan Pieper.  Pieper is ranked ninth in the NWCA poll.  Dwyer beat eighth-ranked Sam Engelland of UW-Oshkosh Friday night.

Whitewater's Corey Anderson (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) went 3-0, pinning all three opponents in the first period.  Jake Fredricksen (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock), ranked sixth in D3, Brian Lewis (Verona/Verona), Corey Schmidt (Homewood, IL/Homewood Flossmoor), Cedric Gibson (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield), and Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), all went 3-0 in the Border Brawl.  UW-W is 18-6 in dual meets.

UW-Whitewater will compete next in the Wheaton Invitational Saturday , January 27 at 1:00 pm and 28 at 9:00 am, against opponents yet to be determined.  The Warhawks will host their next home match on February  9, hosting UW-Parkside.
