The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team, ranked twelfth in the
National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, defeated #22 Springfield College 27-9 to win the championship of the
Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania Friday and Saturday.
UW-W defeated #24 Ohio Northern University in a semifinal Saturday morning, and swept three matches Friday to advance to the championship match. Whitewater is 14-6 overall in dual meets, 14-5 versus Division III competition. In addition to the two wins over ranked teams Saturday, UW-W defeated #23 Wabash College Friday.
Both of UW-Whitewater's nationally-ranked wrestlers went undefeated in the tournament.
Corey Anderson (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), ranked third at 285, went 4-0, and Jake Fredrickson, sixth at 133 pounds, was 5-0. They were joined by freshman
Mike Schloegel (Joliet, IL/Lincoln-Way Community), who was 5-0 at 125 pounds.
The final finish order for the tournament, 1-8, was UW-W first, Springfield second, Ohio Northern third, New York-Cortland fourth, York College fifth, Messiah College sixth, Wabash College in seventh and UW-Stevens Point eighth. Nine of the sixteen teams in the field were mentioned in the NWCA top 30 poll.
