Warhawks Still in First with One to Go

UW-Whitewater held on to first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 75-62 win over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night at Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  UW-W can double its pleasure, clinching the WIAC title for both women and men with victories over UW-Superior at home Saturday.

Oshkosh put the first two points on the scoreboard, but Whitewater followed up with ten straight.  Leading 31-25 with 2:50, Whitewater closed out the half with nine straight, six coming on three jumpers by Nicole Bundy (Fredonia/Ozaukee).  Whitewater led 40-25 at the half.

Whitewater led by double digits until Megan Wenig hit a three for the Titans to make it 51-44 at 13:37.  UW-W began another run at 10:21 and ten consecutive points later held a 67-51 lead at 6:29.  The Warhawks held a double digit lead the rest of the way.

Whitewater's defense limited UW-O to 34% shooting from the floor, including 28% in the first half.  The Titans had a big advantage at the free throw line, going 20-25 to 9-14 for UW-W, but Whitewater's advantage came from making 31 field goals to 19 for Oshkosh.

Bundy led both teams with 23 points and nine rebounds.  Senior point guard Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe) chipped in with 18 points, adding three assists and three steals.  The steals added to her school record total for the season, now at 105.  Freshman center Cortney Kumerow (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) was also in double figures with 12.

Oshkosh was led by freshman guard Katie Kitzke's eleven points, with sophomore forward Kelsey Myklebust scoring ten points with a team high eight rebounds.

UW-W is 18-6 overall and 11-4 in the WIAC.  The Warhawks share the conference lead with UW-Stevens Point at 11-4, with both teams in action Saturday.  UW-Oshkosh concluded the season 8-17 and 3-13 in league play.

The Warhawks will conclude the season at home, hosting UW-Superior at 1:00 in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.  A win would give the Warhawks at least a share of the WIAC title, and the number one seed in the WIAC Tournament.  The tourney begins Tuesday, February 23, with the top two teams earning a first round bye.  Second round play will be Thursday, February 25 at 7:00, with the first and second seeds hosting.
