The Warhawk women's basketball, ranked twenty-third in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, defeated UW-Stout 83-64 in Menomonie Saturday night.

Box Score

With Stout leading 9-6 UW-Whitewater combined the inside play of senior center Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville) and a couple of steals into a 12-0 run to lead 18-9 at the 12:42 mark of the first half.  Thompson accounted for six of those points on three baskets.  Stout came back to within four at 9:42 and the score at 18-14, but UW-W used a pair of 6-0 runs over the next five minutes to build a 34-16 lead with 4:54 left in the half.  Stout pulled closer by ending the half on their own 6-0 run, for a 38-27 Whitewater lead at intermission.

The Blue Devils scored the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to single digits, but a Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) layup seventeen seconds later put it back to double digits where it remained the rest of the game.  Whitewater eventually built a 26-point lead, at the end of a 10-0 streak, for its largest lead of the game at 63-37 with 11:45 left in the game.

Whitewater shot 45% for the game, including 53% in the second half, and held Stout to 35% for the game.  The Warhawk defense forced 27 turnovers, almost double the number (14) committed by UW-W.  Whitewater shot well from the line, hitting 12-13 for 92%, but Stout actually out-scored the Warhawks at the stripe by hitting 18-24.  Utilizing a system learned at the knee of Stout coach Mark Thomas, UW-W coach Keri Carollo used fifteen players in the game, and eleven of them broke into the scoring column.  Whitewater's bench tallied 38 points, Stout's 16.

Thompson led UW-W with 14 points and six rebounds.  Junior forward Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) and sophomore forward Cortney Kumerow (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) had ten points apiece, and junior guard Jamie Swanson (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) contributed game highs in assists, 4, and steals, 7.   Freshman guard Sami Schoeder had the game high in points, 20, and chipped in with seven rebound for UW-S.  The only other player in double digits for the Blue Devils was sophomore guard Kayla Windt, with 11.  Sophomore forward Whitney Rawdon grabbed a game high eight boards for Stout.

The Warhawks remain unbeaten in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2-0 and improve to 5-1 overall. UW-Stout falls to 0-2 in the WIAC and 3-5 overall.

UW-W will host UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, December 8 at 7:00 pm in Kachel Gym in Williams Center. The game has been designated 2007-08 and 2009-10 championship recognition night.
