Free Throws Lead to Win

The Warhawk men's basketball team used a fifteen point advantage from the free throw line to defeat Marian University (WI) 82-71 Saturday night in Kachel Gym in Whitewater, WI.

UW-W shot 59% from the field in the first half while holding Marian to 35%. Marian kept the game close throughout most of the first half until UW-W's 14-3 run to head into the locker rooms gave Whitewater a 45-30 advantage.

Whitewater held a double digit lead until the Sabres came back to within seven, 74-67, with 3:06 left in the game. Six of the last eight Warhawk points came from the charity stripe. Despite being outscored in the second half, UW-W came out on top winning 82-71.

Whitewater shot 88% from the free throw line, making 29 of 33 tries in the game. Marian went to the line just 16 times and made 14.

Antone Byrd (Milwaukee/Washington) had a game high 28 points including an 18-18 performance from the free throw line. The 18 from the line ties for first in the UW-W record book for free throws made in a game. The two others who have accomplished this were Ricky Spicer in 1989 and Aubrey Lewis-Byers in 2003. Chris Davis (Madison/East) posted a double double with 23 points and 11 boards. DJ Dantzler (Joliet, IL/Joliet Township) added 16 and two steals.

Jeff Harris led Marian with 19 points. Donnahugh Brown added 13 points and three assists. Colin Lohenry pulled down eight rebounds for the Sabres.

The Warhawks will  host Carroll University Tuesday, December 21 at 7:00 pm in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
