Thunder Reigns Over Warhawks

The Warhawk men's basketball team, ranked twenty-first in the d3hoops.com preseason poll, fell to the Wheaton College 92-66 in the Lee Pfund Classic hosted by Wheaton in Wheaton, Illinois Saturday.

Wheaton broke out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back.  From 12:31 left in the first half through the rest of the game Wheaton's lead never dipped below double figures.  Twice in the first half, 37-18 at 4:08, and 39-20 with 3:15 left, the margin reached 19 points.  The teams went in to the locker room with Wheaton leading 45-29.  The Thunder shot 53% from the field in the half, Whitewater 38%.

Wheaton continued to roll in the second half.  The Thunder's lead grew to 28 points, 92-64 with 1:09 left, and the closest UW-W could come was 59-44 midway through the half.

Wheaton wound up shooting 60% in the game, including 68% in the second half.  Whitewater shot 39%.  The Warhawks can look to a positive, the team broke the school free throw accuracy record by making all 17 of its attempts.  The previous best in the school record book was 14-14 November 27, 1982 against UW-Milwaukee.  Senior guard #D.J. Dantzler# led the Warhawks at the line, going 8-8.

Dantzler also led the Warhawks with 21 points.  Junior forward Chris Davis (Madison/East) was also in double figures with 16 points, and he led the team with eight rebounds.  Dantzler and Davis were also named to the Lee Pfund Classic All-Tournament Team.

Wheaton had five players in double figures, led by freshman guard Jon DeMoss' 24 points.  Junior forward Tim McCrary contributed 22 points, hitting 11-13 shots from the field, and a game high nine rebounds.

Whitewater is 1-1 and Wheaton 2-1 this season.

UW-W will get a chance to play on its new floor, completely replaced during the summer, Wednesday, November 24 at 7:00, hosting Wisconsin Lutheran College at Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
