Women Topple Falcons from Unbeaten Ranks

And now there are none.  UW-Whitewater's 76-62 win over UW-River Falls at the Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater Saturday night gave the Falcons their first loss of the season and tightened the knot of teams at the top of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

UW-W never trailed in the game.  With 7:41 left in the first half Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) made two free throws to give the Warhawks their first double digit lead, 26-16.  It stayed in double figures for the rest of the game.  Whitewater had a 14 point margin late in the first half, and it expanded to 18, 58-40 at the end of a 7-0 run with 10:02 left in the game. 

UW-W shot 45% from the floor, limiting the Falcons to 39% shooting, and the Warhawks enjoyed an eight point bulge at the free throw line, hitting 30-40 attempts while UW-RF went 22-28 from the line. 

Senior point guard Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe) shared scoring honors for UW-W with 18 points, also contributing a game high ten rebounds and three steals.  She also committed just two turnovers.  Sophomore forward Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) scored a career high 18 points, hitting 7-9 from the field.  Senior guard Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) added 17 points, going 8-10 from the charity stripe.   Sophomore guard Megan Theune (Whitewater/Whitewater) led both teams with three assists.  UW-RF sophomore forward Taylor house take game scoring honors with 21 points, making eight of her nine shots.  Sophomore guard Tiffany Gregorich chipped in with 14 points, eight of those coming off nine free throws.  Brittany Gregorich led the Falcons with seven rebounds and two assists.

UW-RF, 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the WIAC, came in to the game ranked thirteenth and fourteenth in the two national Division III polls, and UW-W, 11-3 and 4-1, was nineteenth and twentieth in the rankings.

Whitewater will travel to UW-Oshkosh Wednesday and UW-Eau Claire Saturday.  The next home contest will be January 20 at 7:00 with UW-Platteville visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
