Pointers Use Free Throws to Down Warhawks

It may not be as glamorous as an arcing three pointer or as exciting as a driving layup, but number twenty UW-Stevens Point used the free throw line to defeat twenty-second ranked UW-Whitewater 68-51 Wednesday night in a battle for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater.

Point jumped out to a 9-0 lead, eventually building their biggest lead of the half, 14-3 on a three pointer by Cassie Bandow at 14:42.  Whitewater pulled within two, three times, before the Pointers took a 33-28 lead in to the locker room at the half.

UW-SP scored the first basket of the second half, but Whitewater forged into the lead with a 13-2 run to take a 41-37 lead at 13:17.  Cortney Kumerow (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) scored nine of UW-W's points in that stretch.  The Pointers came back, using seven Warhawk fouls to score ten of their next sixteen points at the free throw line to lead 55-45 at 5:31.  From that time on Point scored eight of its last thirteen points at the line.

UW-SP went 22-30 from the free throw line, Whitewater 9-11.  Point also earned a 39-29 rebound advantage, fifteen of those coming on the offensive glass.

Senior guard Nicole Bundy (Fredonia/Ozaukee) scored 17 points and added eight rebounds for UW-W.  Kumerow scored 15, and sophomore forward Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) led both teams with nine boards.  UW-SP was led in scoring by guard Andrea Flease's 24 points, hitting 10-13 from the line.  Britta Petersen scored 13 and led the Pointers with eight rebounds.  Flease also led UW-SP with four assists, half her team's total.

UW-Whitewater is 13-5 overall and 6-3 in the WIAC.  UW-SP, which lost to the Warhawks 76-71 December 10 in Point, is 16-3 and 8-2.

UW-W will host UW-Stout at 4:00 Saturday in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
