Warhawks Up Win Streak to Seven

The UW-Whitewater men's basketball team, ranked seventh in the latest D3hoops.com poll, improved their win streak to seven with a 62-57 victory over UW-Stout in Menomonie, WI Saturday.

A 6-0 run from the Warhawks on a three-pointer by Nolan Free (Sheboygan/North) and a free throw and layup by DJ Dantzler (Joliet, IL/Joilet Township West), gave them the only double-digit lead of the game, 25-15, with 9:46 left in the half. Stout whittled the lead down to four just once but UW-W kept the pressure on heading into the locker room with a five point lead 34-29.

The Blue Devils tied up the score 39-39 with 13:01 left in the second half and a back-and-forth battle ensued. After five ties, another 6-0 run for Whitewater beginning with 1:51 left in the game gave the Warhawks the winning margin 62-57.

Free throws proved to be a huge asset for Whitewater as they went 14-18 from the line to Stout's 6-8. UW-W also had three more assists (16) and steals (9) than the Blue Devils.

Four Warhawks hit double digits in points including Free and Dantzler with 13 a piece, Mike Bendall (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) added 12 and Dustin Mitchell (Lac Du Flambeau/Lakeland) pitched in 10. Bendall, Free, and Phil Negri (Minocgua/Lakeland) had six rebounds each with Negri adding a game high eight assists and three steals.

Stout's junior guard Eric Hostetter had a game high 18 points. Senior guard Jerrel Enerson-Matthews added 13 more and junior guard Jerrod Buccholtz led all players grabbing seven rebounds.

UW-W is 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Warhawks will host UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at 7:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
