On an evening dedicated to former assistant coach Pete Von Allmen, the Warhawk women didn't disappoint. UW-W defeated UW-La Crosse 68-50 in Kachel Gym in the Williams Center Wednesday on Think Pete Night in honor of Von Allmen, who passed away in September. The game was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

La Crosse led on the first basket of the game, but a 15-2 Whitewater run gave the Warhawks the lead for good. UW-L got back within five twice in the first half, but the period ended with UW-W in front 30-23.
Early in the second half the Warhawks had another run, 7-0, to put the margin at 39-25 with 17:33 left. Whitewater's first twenty point lead came with 8:54 left on a Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe) three, 54-34. Whitewater's lead never fell below 18 points the rest of the way.
The Warhawk defense forced 25 turnovers, with 13 steals. Hendrickson lead the way with seven steals, which ties for tenth place in the UW-W record book.
Senior center Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville) topped UW-W with 29 points and 10 rebounds, both also game highs. Thompson hit 10-14 shots from the floor and 9-13 free throws. Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran), Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) and Hendrickson share game high honors with four assists each.
Junior forward Melissa Lang came off the bench to lead UW-L with12 points for the Eagles. Junior forward Dana Churchill added 11 points and Danielle Frank, a junior center, contributed 10. Churchill and Frank shared the team lead with eight boards apiece. UW-L is 5-2 overall.
UW-Whitewater, 5-0 and ranked sixth and seventh in the two national polls, will play at UW-Stout Saturday at 4:00. The next home game for the Warhawks is a January 2 meeting with Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:00, Parent's Night.
