Women's Basketball Opens with Win

It remains to be seen if this is a career night, but coach Keri Carollo can certainly hope that senior forward Nicole Bundy (Fredonia/Ozaukee) stays in a groove.  Bundy scored a career high 32 points, hitting 13-17 shots from the field, to lead UW-Whitewater to an 89-75 win at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa Tuesday night.

The Warhawks jumped out to a 20-2 lead with 14:56 left in the first half and maintained their margin the rest of the way.  It was 55-39 at the half.  Loras cut the margin to thirteen twice in the second half, 66-53 at 12:59 and 75-62 at 9:35, but each time recovered.

What Bundy, who averaged 5.4 points per game last year, was accomplishing from the field senior center Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville) did at the line.  Thompson, who finished with 22 points, hit 10 of 14 free throws.  Thompson accounted for ten of Whitewater's thirteen made free throws.  Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) contributed a game high nine rebounds and Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe) led both teams with six assists and four steals.

Loras had three players in double figures, led by 15 from junior forward Sarah Pillon who was 4-4 from the line.  Freshman forward Katie Wheeler contributed 14 and senior guard Lindsay Bava added 12.

The Warhawks shot 51% (34-66) shot the floor and 44% (8-18) from three point range.  Loras made 20-25 free throws (80%), 7-20 from beyond the arc (35%) and shot 46% (24-52) from the floor.  The Warhawks won the turnover column 21-27 and steals (15-10).

UW-Whitewater and Loras are both 1-0.  Whitewater will continue the "Iowa portion" of its schedule November 25 at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The first home game for the Warhawks is December 2 at 7:00 with UW-La Crosse visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
